The BlackRock Center for the Arts

One of my pet peeves about gallery web sites is that some of them suffer from poor design.  On many sites, you had to click through three or more levels of links just to get to an exhibition schedule, for example.  One of the worst offenders in our area, in my honest opinion, was the web site for the BlackRock Center for the Arts.  It looks to me like somebody else thought the same thing.  Check out the new site design.  It's a marked improvement over the old, with much easier access to content and information.

Just thought I'd help out

I was a little confused about this post over at Art @ TheKATZEN until I read the comments.  The Katzen Center's going to be opening to the public on July 16th.  The WaPo did an article on the 3rd about the Katzen's, the history of the idea of the Center, and the story of how they got the Center approved, built, and opened.  The only problem Jack Rasmussen, director and curator of the Center, had was that he didn't have any idea how to link to the Post.  Here's the link to the article.  Now, will somebody please get that man a help file?

smART lunch series

The Maryland Art Place is running a lunch time series during July called the smART lunch series.  On Wednesday July 13th, 20th, and 27th they'll be hosting a talk by guest speakers.  If you're interested, here's what they want you to do:

        Just call Mondo Bondo (410) 244-8080 by 10am the day of the talk to order         a "MAP Special" lunch. Then come to Maryland Art Place (8 Market         Place, Suite 100 - see the map below) around noon.

        Your lunch will be waiting for you in our delightfully air conditioned         gallery and every talk is hosted by various guest speakers. Each program         begins at 12:15pm and will last thirty minutes. Afterwards, feel free         to chat with new friends and area artists, or take a moment to enjoy the         exhibition at your leisure.

Amber Coast

We went to the Frederick Gallery Walk Saturday evening.  Can't say that we saw much art-wise.  Most of the galleries we saw sold only prints.  We saw very few works that were original.  The standout for me was our visit to the Amber Coast, a jewelry/crafts store that pulls in work from, well, the Amber Coast (Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, etc.).  This store had some of the best amber I've seen outside of Lithuania and some of the best jewelry I've seen in a long time.  The prices?  Real good.  They've got glasswork, some ceramics, and other craftworks available there, too.

Black Rock Center for the Arts

I like the Black Rock Center for the Arts.  Nice part of town, decent size gallery space, and a good variety of artists shown there.  But what I don't understand is their decision to have that gallery space, use it, fill it with art, put a schedule of upcoming exhibitions on their web site but not put up any images for us to see.  I have to go to the Center to see if the exhibit sucks or not.

Any way, the latest exhibit at Black Rock is by Lisa Egeli, whose work does not suck.  The show runs from May4 to June 3.  Lisa, a sensible woman, has posted images of her work here.

DC Art Salon

I found an announcement on Craigslist.com for a new gallery called DC Art Salon.  It's located on Cathedral Ave just below the National Cathedral itself.  They'll be having exhibitions every Wednesday.  Here's their take on what they're about:

Our vision at DCArtSalon is to provide our visitors with the opportunity to view the works of up-and-coming artists, sculptors, and photographers in an enjoyable and intimate environment. Visitors will be able to meet the exhibitor for the evening and enjoy complimentary wine and cheese along with beautiful views of the National Cathedral. The exhibitor's work will be available for purchase for those interested.

        Exhibits are held every Wednesday between the hours of 7 & 10 pm.

Sounds like a good deal.
